School-Based Occupational Therapy Shadow Experience
During my recent shadowing experience at an elementary school in Cleveland, Ohio, I gained valuable insight into the essential role that occupational therapists (OTs) and certified occupational therapy assistants (COTAs) provide to students within schools. Their work is extremely intentional and individualized toward each kid, fostering personal growth and academic success. In my time shadowing, I experienced many impactful sessions.
The sessions ranged from working on time management skills or emotional regulation to hand strength, typing, and writing skills. Many of these sessions were student-led, where the therapist allowed the students to guide the session based on their interests. One sixth-grader was working on his emotional regulation skills and expressed interest in drawing during his session.
The therapist used his interests to develop proactive coping skills through drawings depicting himself in different situations. I realized that the more the student’s interests were considered during a session, the more progress they would make to reach their goals. Students achieved measurable progress through fun activities such as multi-step crafts, stress ball exercises, or cooking. These sessions built academic skills and boosted students’ confidence and independence.
School-based OT goes beyond academic support; it’s about helping students develop the life skills they need to succeed. These individualized interventions are crucial in creating inclusive, supportive environments that set students up to thrive.
